I just wanted to pass on my personal cholesterol info to show how much these levels can drop. After my May 14th cholesterol check (264), I decided to see how much of an impact I could have. Although my doctor prescribed a low dose (20mg) of a cholesterol lowering drug, Simvastatin (ZOCOR®) on June 4th, I had already changed my diet. I believe the diet and not the drug was the reason for the great results. I drastically reduced the amount on cholesterol and fats that I ate. I also drastically increased the amount of dietary fiber I ate. Instead of milk, I switched to soy milk. Of course I ate oatmeal, Cheerios and raisin bran for breakfast and cut down on sugary drinks. Instead of regular meats, I used a soy substitute (Boca-Burger). I also ate a lot of salads and fruits. One thing that I need to do is exercise more. This will increase my HDL (good cholesterol) level. After 69 days of this, my levels were checked again. I basically cut all the bad stuff in half. Here are the results:
| Name | 5/14/08 | 7/22/08 | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| CHOLESTEROL | 264 | 137 | - 127 |
| CHOLESTEROL/HIGH DENSITY LIPOPROTEIN | 5.9 | 3.2 | - 2.7 |
| HDL | 45 | 43 | - 2 |
| LDL CALCULATED | 166 | 70 | - 96 |
| TRIGLYCERIDE | 265 | 122 | - 143 |
